Had a draft today.

Actually, had a draft last Thursday, but I forgot about it (thought it was Friday) and missed it.

Did today’s live. And was surprised at how excited I was getting from the anticipation of the draft. Though the draft itself, isn’t really fun. People mainly just bitch about how you make mistakes. Or other people steal your players right before you get a chance to get them.? Very little encouragement in the environment.

During the draft, I altered my strategy a bit, cause I forgot to think about who I’m playing against (all these supposed experts). And when picking with these experts, one can take advantage of their zealousness over running backs. I just didn’t. Forgot to do that. Perhaps, if I had read our own editorial beforehand, I would have made a different 2nd pick.

But it really doesn’t matter. Injuries are gonna pop up (Priest & Vick). Others have contract/morale/support issues (Alexander and James). And some won’t even play (Owens). How can one risk taking those players?

Perhaps my weakness comes with my own philosophy. I don’t buy tobaco related stocks. And I don’t draft players I wouldn’t want to root for (Owens). James – that’s a heartbreaker for me – I’d love to have taken him, fully confident he’d have a good season, but I’m worried by his “I’m like Martha Stewart – gonna serve my 5 months and then be free” mentality. Not that it’s all his fault. I would have loved to see Peyton take a paycut and help his own cause by buying some support.

Anyway – it’s fun – the trash talk and bravado – and silly. Cause again, I’ll say a lot has to do with luck. And unfortunately, most of it is bad luck. Last year, I had Peyton and he was setting records and they wanted to kick me out of the league cause I did so poorly. And I did do poorly. But I think all but 2 weeks, I had a score in the top 3. I just happened to be playing one of the two who had a score higher than me. I had the toughest schedule by far. And I got spanked. Bad draft? Nah. Just bad luck.

It has taken a lot of restraint on my part not to start up another thread about how I’m lucky but not good cause I got a playoff bye in the fantasy baseball league we’re in. And I don’t even know baseball. I learned the official definition of a save this season. And what is WHIP? Crazy math.

So, it is building up – boiling over almost – and win or lose, there’ll be more dissertations on luck this football season…

  1. Tony Gonzalez as your 2nd pick… I had to laugh. I have talked so much smack for football and thank god you suck at drafting. Free lunchs for 17 weeks – sadly won’t make up for the baseball season, but at least Kari gets to come along too.

  2. tony – i can still sleep easy with that pick. according to the default rankings, he’s in the top 30. right behind tatum bell. and if that’s so wrong that it’s funny, well, maybe someone should look at improving the product we put out? i believe some people were a little surprised tatum bell was ranked so high, seeing as how he’s not even a starter…i wonder if…

besides – tony was just on MTV cribs the other day – nice place in manhattan beach. warren moon was hanging out. there was a good vibe. big season coming…

still, there’s too much luck in this game for one to take a victory in it and claim it was skill.

shawn could play in a league with 11 monkeys (they’d use the yahoo default auto-pick to draft) and i bet he wouldn’t win the league. he could even pick what position in the dreft he needed. anyone bet he could?

  3. We’ll find out this season, because there are 11 monkeys in the y! sports league. Actually, probably worse than 11 monkeys, cause they used their own minds to pick players.

  4. at least I am not included in the monkeys this year. besides, you have to watch that baray guy throwing games to try and share in the money with co-conspirators! not that it worked.
