Accent on the pain.

So, not sure how many people out there have gone into an office building, stripped down into their underwear, and then paid someone to hurt them, but I’d like to hear from you if you have.  I’m still questioning my own experience.

He started working my shoulders cause I’ve got trouble moving my arms above my head.  Today, a day and a half later, my ribs are sore and the back of my neck itches.  Though my arms do move higher above my head than before with the same effort.  So something did change, but not sure how much is mental.

He said the difference between this and a deep massage would be that here he’s really adjusting my connective tissues.  As long as I believe that, I figure this will keep working.

As far as the psychotherapy benefits – I can see how when one is laying on one’s side and someone is digging fingers into one’s armpit and one is moving their arm around and increasing the pain, one might blurt out something like “I never forgave my mother for giving away my teddy bear when I was 3 – I hate her!”

Cause unless you’ve got a well established happy place to go to, you mind can go to some strange places while you help inflict some substantial pain on yourself.  Though it seems like getting tattoos and having done some active release therapy has properly prepared me for dealing with the pain without having significant revelations.  Too bad huh?

In fact, the most significant revelation I had was around his pricing and good marketing.  I read “Introductory Rate: $50 off 3 sessions” as a savings of $150 and felt that was quite a deal…but it’s actually only a savings of $50.  Things have to really pick up over the next couple of sessions to convince me that I need to go for more than 3 sessions.

Luckily last night, as I was showing Catherine how when I try and touch my toes, the legs of my shorts are always off by an inch, she said “Your hips are all jacked up” – so there are some obvious gains that can be made.  Just not sure I want to know how the connective tissue around my hips will be adjusted…

…but I thought about it today. I’ve got a Rolfing session after work and there are some interesting points to the Rolfing process…

1- They photograph you before the sessions start and at the end. The point is to be able to see your body’s misalignment in the beginning and to see the improvement in the end. And to see these differences most clearly, you’re in your underwear.

2- They recommend that you don’t wear contacts. Especially for some of the sessions in the series specifically.

3- Some patients claim to get repressed memories released during the process. One testimonial I read said the 10 sessions were better than 7 years of psychoanalysis.

4- One Rolfer I emailed asking for more info and explaining my situation replyed back with “I’m not sure Rolfing(tm) is right for you, or that you are right for Rolfing(tm).” Lots of that reply turned me off, but enough other people I do respect had recommended it, that I wasn’t deterred. Plus it just proved what an interesting bunch these Rolfers are.

So, sure, why wouldn’t anyone pay decent money to get some muscular memories released while in your underwear with a stranger? Beats me. I mean, I’m going because of the various tendonitis issues I’ve got, maybe help me strengthen my knees, and open up my shoulders so that I don’t grow into my hunchbacked father.

The underwear is modelling is just a bonus.
