Not the book. Just a different type of lunchtime discussion.? I mentioned tipping the shooter during a good craps roll. And dealers. And I tip dealers even when I lose. (Some part of me thinks that’ll help change the karma and I’ll start winning – so it is not completely altruistic.) And then I was asked if I tip the cable guy. And I did tip the guys that installed our directv dish. And we did tip the guys that installed the furnace/air-conditioner. And a plumber. Not sure about the garage door guy…don’t remember. I think so – because one time he gave us a free “adjustment” after the door was dented a bit.

And not everyone agrees with that tipping policy. People are getting paid to do their job – why should we tip them? And why should we be expected to tip them?

There’s no right or wrong side to this argument – just a lifestyle choice and a priority of money. I know with money I confuse Catherine often, cause my “rules” vary quite a bit. Sometimes I care about every dollar, other times I’m tipping dealers 100. I don’t worry about my rules that much – I know they interfere with each other. But I’m reasonably happy. Reading the Millionaire Next Door was an enlightening read – but it wasn’t quite enough to convert us into more frugal people so that we could become wealthy on paper. We still like to enjoy ourselves.

Anyway – this argument repeats itself over and over again and I didn’t think it was worth writing about, until I realized that some people that don’t like the concept of tipping someone for just doing the job they are paid for – some of them sometimes maybe complain a bit about how YHOO is performing or how the company is getting stingy with option grants…
