Jacobellis did a method air while finishing up her boardercross olympic final and fell on the landing, thus losing the gold and having to settle for a silver.
I don’t know how to feel about it.
On one hand, I like the young spirit and having fun and well, yeah, it was stupid and you learn from it. That’s part of growing up. I feel bad for her. She finished and stood about 3 feet away from the Swiss gal that won. The Swiss gal’s friends all around her, jumping up and down, celebrating. No one for Jacobellis. It was sad.
On the other hand, she’s made tons of money from endorsements (she’s the Visa check card girl) and was representing the USA and to lose because of showboating?? That kind of bothers me.? Win with class. Even if she had landed it and won, I wouldn’t have really liked that either?? One of the racers was carted off by ski patrol, might have had a concussion.
And if you don’t land it, can we even call it showboating? Don’t you have to win to be able to? showboat? Isn’t it more like choking.
She said at first it was for stabilization. So I Tivo’d the event last night and watched it this morning. From the side angle – it looks like a normal grab and she was doing little grabs through qualifiers. But…NBC’s got all the angles – impressively so – have you seen them superimpose downhill skiers next to each other? Very cool. So they have the camera angle from the finish line and there, you can see that she tweaked her board quite a bit during the grab, getting her board almost perpendicular to the line of her forward motion, and it was straight when she landed, just she caught her heel edge after the landing and went down. NBC even showed a side by side view of her jump in the semi-finals and the tweaked jump in the finals. NBC didn’t pull any punches.
So it wasn’t for stabilization and she did change her story. To something about how snowboarders are out to have fun. And that’s when the Razor had to comment – Hope silver’s fun.
