…that Sal’s music class movies are funny. They think the kicking around doing the Charleston is really a crack up. That it is nonsense. And I kind of agree. I don’t think he’s getting anything musical out of it – it certainly isn’t speeding up his trip down accordian lane…I’d be inclined to even say it’s kind of a sham to separate parents from their cash. So many baby things out there are scams – preying on parents who just want to be a bit better, or who want to buy their way out of some guilt/responsibilty, or are just silly. Not sure what category we fall into though. But we aren’t sending Sal to music class with his nanny. Yet.

But Sal is having a good time, being tossed around, with other babies and mothers and nannies. Except for that little crying bit during the Charleston. Though he’s happy with an old running shoe. So again, maybe it’s not worth it right now.

Except, it also keeps his mother happy. So I don’t complain. Happy mommy is good for us all. Regardless of whether the music is seeping in. (When Sal and I cruise in the corvette, we’re listening to Prince. Tom Jones. Loius Prima. And sometimes, sports talk radio…) And it makes for funny movies. Some people say they haven’t laughed that hard in months.

Anyway – just a heads up. If you enjoyed the music class movies…well, Sal started swim classes today! Man, I was proud of the little dude, hanging in there as they were dunking his face into the water. They count it off – 1, 2, 3, dunk! Great idea. If you can count. Sal’s like – “Wow – Hi there – I wanna grab your finger. Oooh – more fingers. Ahhh – another finger? – great! Maybe I can reach them…Hey! What the-!” as he’s tossed into the water.

He’s the littlest guy in the class. Some kids are already swimming around (they can walk too…) But he was there, taking the splashing in stride. Cruised around in a little tube for a while. He was pretty mellow then. At least one other kid was crying much more than Sal – and Sal I don’t think was crying all that much. Just after the dunks.

Afterwards, Moms said he had a little bit of the deathgrip on her arm during some points…but you couldn’t tell that from the viewing lobby.

  1. so the dancing – i’d be a much happier person if they cut it out of the class. it’s tough lugging a 20 pounder while you’re being told to do si do. and not that i’d normally want to do si do.
but there is a lot more to the class then the moronic dances. sal seeing the other babies crawling and moving about i think is interesting for him. i swear his crawling improved after watching one of the other babies crawl. could be coincidence – but i do see him studying the other kids. and he loves the bouncing which is good for the vestibular system and a lot of the movements match the words – which i would think couldn’t hurt his verbal skills. the songs have rhymes that he can eventually learn. as he grows older i’m sure he’ll be able to gleen more from it. the older kids know the dances and start doing them on their own. but i think sal’s getting something out of it. he smiles through almost all the class and that’s fun for me to see.

  2. we’ve done both the music classes and the swim classes and while i’m positive neither class had any impact on his skills for the future, i’m just as positive that just having a class to go to is good for the mommy and baby. and like you said, happy mommy is a good thing.

  3. Hmm…to learn from others – takes quite a mental model. I’ll argue for coincidence.

But I won’t argue against that because of music class, there might be more coincidences…

  4. […] I teared up a little bit, there in the lobby, watching him start class without me.  Though he started with Catherine and did some stints with Sandy, I think he did most of the classes with me.  After all, I could […]
