Saw Wicked the other night. Was okay. Hard to understand a lot of the lyrics in the songs. I think that’s why I appreciate foreign opera more – cause it has subtitles and I can just enjoy the songs and get the story. English opera or this Wicked thing and I’m straining to understand the lyrics to get the story.
Kari said it was clever. And I guess it was. I was expecting the writing itself being clever, like Arrested Development or 30 Rock type clever, but the writing wasn’t that clever. Kind of lame jokes actually. I was astounded that the audience was laughing at some of the lines even. But the overall story and how it was integrated into the Wizard of Oz (at least what I remember/made up about it) was pretty clever.
Though Catherine might be right when she commented that I might have liked the row behind us more than the show. The tiny seats didn’t help much either. Must get aisle seat from now on.
Some of the lines from the peanut gallery behind us:
- “Oh no she didn’t!” Though it was hushed, one lady said that when someone was making fun of the green witch. Another lady during another insult said “Awwww” like she really felt bad for the green witch getting teased. But again, the jokes were lame “It seems like the artichoke is steamed!” when the green witch was upset. I can’t laugh at those lines.
- “Shoot her!” the little dude behind us was cheering for that when the love interest dude had his gun aimed at the good witch.
- “She didn’t die?” Maybe this is a spoiler, but again, the little dude came through with a line that had me cracking up and getting an elbow from Catherine.
Would I see it again? Nah. There were some fanatics at the theater which was kind of surprising. But I wouldn’t see it again. Though I don’t regret going. It had Andy Kaufman’s wife from Taxi in it. And Al Bundy’s neighbor from Unhappily Married After was the Wizard which was kind of interesting. I flat out just like musicals though, cause sometimes they’ll give me a chill in my spine as people are just singing their hearts out. There were a couple of those moments here, where I end up feeling like life would be so much more fun if it was all a musical.
With generous legroom.
