And I don’t mean the reality stuff – like Real World/Road Rules meets survivor that they have going on now. I kind of like that.  EJ’s telling me there’s a spin off to the I Love New York show which was a spin off of Flavor Of Love and I can’t track all those shows either.

I’m thinking bigger budget ones – that are actually written.  Life on Mars and My Own Worst Enemy. Watching these shows, I just don’t buy into the initial leap of faith you need to follow the show.

My Own Worst Enemy – you have a super spy, you give him an alternate personality and then you can no longer control which personality he will be, which creates some zany situations that we haven’t seen the likes of since Three’s Company.  Fine, that could be awkward switching back and forth.  It’s okay that you steal the wife swapping thing from either an Updike short story or FaceOff.  My question is – if you have a cool super spy, why complicate things with an alternate personality in the first place?  Seems like that’s taking an extra step that can benefit no one – just create trouble.  Made for TV trouble.

Life on Mars -a cop that needs to solve his girlfriend’s kidnapping and gets hit by a car on the way and in his coma he imagines that he’s a cop in the 70’s and he’s gonna solve related crimes that are leading up to his girlfriend’s kidnapping.  What?  My Name is Earl did 2-3 coma fantasy shows last season and that spawned off a whole new series?

I should rely on OnDemand at 3am instead of my DVR choices.

Heroes – still tough to watch.  I need smarter superheroes still.  I think I fell asleep 3 times during the 2 hour show. Never quite got it finished. Though the lady that kills people when she gets upset is pretty.

Dexter – still fun, but the fact that he’s dating is show foster sister in real life complicates things for me.

Sarah Connor Chronicles – I want to like this season more. But the 1st show, where she’s trying to kill him, then gets trapped and talks about how she loves him once pinned, and he almost falls for it – well, that was just lame. And rubbing the chip to fix it – lamer. And now she’s got flashbacks to Allison’s original memories for some reason?  Lamest.  If only I wasn’t so sure that robots would take over the world, I’d really be down on this show. But since they will take over and I wanna be on record as being on their side, I’ll say the show’s okay.  Catherine’s a little miffed at me for suggesting that I’d turn her in as anti-robot when the robots take over (me and Sal are pro-robot).  So I said that when the Martians come, I’ll be anti-martian with her. But that didn’t help much.

Californication – not making as much sense and some writing seems forced.  Still feel like good potential. And is Comcast onDemand giving me an episode a week early?

Life – I still like the writing – looking forward to more of these characters.

The Mentalist – I didn’t like the commercials but started recording it for some reason anyway.  i don’t really like the guy but by the 2nd half hour, I started liking the guy.  Jury still out on this one.

Real world/Road rules challenge – I liked seeing them get stuck on the island. Though the show seems to be taking too long for stuff to happen. Plus MTV doesn’t label their shows right so I’ve got like 34 episodes recorded every week, cause the comcast DVR doesn’t remember what’s been recorded and deleted. Not the show’s fault, but some baggage it’s cursed to carry.

Z Rock – horrible acting. Though I like the dude that manages the bar.  And the manager lady.  But I can’t stand how the band dudes are horrible actors.  Ben says that they’re really living out the story in real life. So they don’t even really need to even act. Which makes them even worse actors.  Want Hollywood Residential to come back.

Always Sunny in Philadelphia -really good acting. Really puts Z Rock to shame.  Waterboarding? Every window of the van tinted? Gorilla faces?  Always creates several chuckles.

How I met your mother – very forced episode the other night.  Catherine even confused about why it sucks so much. Copied meme from the Sarah Marshall movie – maybe that’s a hint as to why it sucks.

Worst Week – Catherine’s uncomfortable watching this show. Bad luck, without too many bad decisions. Just bad luck and tough decisions. I enjoy other people’s misfortunes. But we knew that when I said Catherine’s uncomfortable watching this huh?  A couple more weeks to see if it can keep it up without getting unreasonable.

Fringe – Man, all the ads made me want to watch it, but I can’t get into it. Still being recorded by the dvr, so maybe I’ll give it another chance. Doesn’t seem to move too fast, so I won’t be missing anything.

When’s Rescue Me start back up?  And Testees on FX – those commercials have me hooked.

Scare Tactics is on again.  SciFi channel.  I had a reminder in my blackberry calendar to tell me to start recording it.  It is basically Punk’d but with a horror twist.  Instead of just playing around with people, you scare them.  It is great entertainment.

Usually, it’s someone taking a new job and then something bad immediately happens to them.  Occasionally, it is a group that picks up a psycho hitchiker or goes camping and someone gets “killed”. It is fun watching people freak out and really get engaged in the show.  I think only once did they have to stop the prank because the “victim” started to attack one of the actors.  Several times the victims have run away.  One even ran so far away once that they couldn’t do the “wrap” up with them on site.

Season 3 started with a lady giving birth to a devil child – a midget painted red with a couple of little horns jumped out and attacked the doctor. That was pretty funny to watch.

Anyway, if you like seeing people get scared and possibly traumatized for life, you just might dig this show.

Lady lost $100,000 on that question on Moment of Truth. This is after she admitted to being fired for stealing money, thinking her parents weren’t proud of her, thinking that she’s married to the wrong guy, and having at least one affair.

She had to admit to all that to get to the 100k mark. Then they nailed her on a pretty subjective question that is probably hard to answer, since you could lie to yourself about what the answer is. Or rationalize it. Whichever you prefer.

But I like how it gives the show control over who they give the money to.

“It seems like there are still some things you need to work out…” was the hosts general reply when she found out that her thinking she’s a good person, is a LIE!

Then we saw previews for this week’s show, which had the question of “Have you slept with any of our friends’ wives?” And then cut to an answer of “Yes”.

Now, part of the gimmick of the show’s ads are to mix and match answers, so that “Yes” might not have been to that question. We’ll need to tune in to find out!

But, another part of the show is the explanation afterwards, if they want to. Contestants can answer afterwards, to put some context around it, and that’s not on any lie detector. So say the answer is “Yes” – then you just explain afterwards, “But none of us were married at the time, I think even, that John hadn’t even met Mary yet.” and then everyone’s still cool.

That’s the Achilles heel to the show. I like it.

My wife isn’t as impressed I came up with it. As in – she asks me if I could ever go on the show. And of course, I’m going to say “Yes.” There’s no other answer as far as I’m concerned. I mean, we’re just sitting around talking…

Sort of like, if someone’s (Shawn’s) wife tells a story about how her husband (Shawn) thinks that Danny Noriega kind of looks like Jessica Alba and that he could see himself making out with Danny, then would you expect their response to be “Hey, you weren’t supposed to share that!” or “Hey – why are you telling that lie?!?”

Funny that they’d choose the first answer, huh?

Okay – the Idol is back.

Last year, Ben was talking trash (or skills) about how he knew who would win, after just seeing them all sing once.

Turns out, he didn’t. Shawn and Kari did.

So we’re back again, another season, another pool.

Rules are:

  • picks must be in by 5p PT on Feb 21 (before the east coast airing shows).
  • $20 bucks to make a set of picks.
  • You pick 5 contestants.
  • 1 point for the 1st person kicked off…2 points for the 2nd person kicked off…up to 24 points for the winner.
  • Choose one of your 5 contestants as the Golden Idol – whatever points they get, get doubled.
  • New this year – when we get to single elimination nights (3 weeks from now?) you can pick who’s going to get kicked off each week. If you’re right, you get 10 points. New pick made each week.
  • Person with most points gets 80% of the pool.
  • Person with 2nd most points get 20% of the pool.
  • Use your own intuition – and your intuition cannot be to go read other blogs. Honor code!
  • Only 1 pickset per person (I don’t agree with that, but others wanted it that way)

Send me a message if you want in.

What if they point the article out to you?

Anyway, The Moment of Truth, has missed expectations, but is still pretty entertaining. It’s about what you’re willing to reveal (and get boo’d and judged for) and for how much. The bummer is, even if you lie, the truth is out there, so you reveal it anyway – without getting any money.

Guy last show had to admit he thinks his girlfriend is boring sometimes and that he’s told ethnic jokes about her and her family when they’re not around and that he’s sent flirtatious SMS messages to other women while they’ve been dating. (Catherine has found out by asking me the same questions, that the “home” version of the game isn’t quite the same without the lie detector available).

But, that was all going to be okay, cause he was 1 question away from 25k.

As an underwear model, did you ever stuff your underwear.

Long pause. Then a confident “No”.

FALSE. And he lost the money. And what’s the girlfriend left to think now?

I’ve seen 2 people walk away with 100k each – without revealing any secrets that are that bad. Sure, you get hisses from the audience occasionally, but its worth 100k. Previews show other snippets from future shows where the person’s job gets put into risk, or my favorite so far, where the dad is saying his family should be happy for him (for winning so much money) but they don’t look very happy.

That’s what the show brings for me. The restraint and displeasure across the faces of some of the family and friends on the show – that’s what reality TVs all about!

Supposedly. I’ll tune in to find out though.
