He still loves the corn. Even pausing in the middle of his feast to put the corn down and sign corn a couple of times.

So he was delighted to hear yesterday that we were going to have a corn and bacon salad. My sister had seen the salad on HGTV or some similar type channel and thought that her and Catherine could look up the recipe online and whip that special little number up.

They did their search and found out that all they needed was some corn and some bacon and they would be set. Literally. The ingredients were just corn and bacon.

I tease, but the bacon and corn salad was pretty good. As were all their tamales that they made. Took forever and they won’t do it again anytime soon, but they were good.

My favorite part of the cooking was when I got up at one point and my father passed me by. I noticed he stunk quite a bit. I thought I’d pull him aside and let him know quietly, a bit later. There was some guacamole that I was more interested in.

As I made it over to the guacamole I again got hit with the serious body odor odor again. Except this time, my father was not nearby. Had not passed nearby recently either. I sniffed myself. Could be? Nah.

I had some more guacamole. Then got hit by the odor again. A serious blast. No one else nearby, so I had very few outs. I looked into the kitchen. Maybe…I ventured in just “to see what was going on”. Yup. It was them. They were making some beef and some pork and maybe something else I didn’t see – but the culprit was in the room. I knew I had better triple down on the guacamole, cause I wasn’t so sure how much of the main course I’d be sampling.

So after some more guac, I sat back down to watch some more football. My father returned. He sat down next to me, things were fine for a while, then Sarah mentions to him – “Cesar, put your arms down.”

“Is that me? Good lord, I’ve been smelling something horrible for a while now, but I couldn’t figure out if it was me or not.”

And we laugh for a while. But I figure the truth will get more laughs. So I share my theory that it’s our dinner that has a bad case of body odor. It is good for more laughs. Enough so that the cooks come out. They claim innocence – they can’t smell anything and all they’re using spice wise is cumin.

“Well then cumin smells like a sweaty mexican” was the consensus we came to.

For a while, a vinegar sauce used for dumplings was blamed, but it turned out that was just a masking agent. And in the end, the smell did go away (though we thought it would be fun to accuse every person, as they arrived for dinner, of stinking up the place.)

And the food was wonderfully tasty – especially if one could put the afternoon’s senses out of mind. Plus there was half a boston creme pie left for me.

Merry Christmas!

Update: Here’s the official recipe and though food.yahoo.com sponsors it, they do not seem to have the recipe themselves.

2 cobettes at KFC for a dollar has been Sal’s favorite promotion.
